Bob Haro's Master BMX Bike from the 1980s

mountain biking beginners

Bob Haro's "Master", a revolutionary freestyle bike, revolutionized BMX. It was the iconic model of the mid 1980s. The Master is a bike that was built around progressive geometry with a bold design scheme. The master has set the standard for cutting edge design whether you ride flatland or freestyle.

Haro Bikes was one of the leading brands in freestyle BMX biking bikes during the 1980s. These bikes were the winners of almost every race in the sport. This made them the most popular bikes of the era. FREESTYLIN’ Magazine published the first advert for them in 1985. But it was not until much later that the company created a line freestyle bikes that would change the face of the freestyle world.

Haro Freestyler, and Master were the two first freestyle models on the market. Both models share a similar head tube angle and seat mast. Both share a swaged triangle at the rear. But there are a few key differences between the two bikes.

One important difference is in the form of the fork legs. The fork stander in the first generation was higher up on the fork leg. This allowed forks to fold up easily and kept the bike upright.

Later versions of "Master" were updated. The gussets on the front of the bike were machined to avoid cracking. These frames were also fitted with more refined chainstays. The non-drive side dropouts on the frames were also offset rather than brazed-on.

The second generation USA Haro Master was manufactured by Torker BMX in Fullerton. It bore a resemblance to the original drawing of the 1983 model. There were a number of new features such as swept dropouts, tapered seats stays, and double s bend chain stays that fed into a platform at the rear dropout.

Another major change was the introduction at the front of the Master a fully welded Gusset. This reduced cracking risk and gave the Master a marginal weight edge.

The 1986 models were the most desirable of all the era's models. These bikes were many times based on the 1986 model. However the spec was modified for the 1986 frame's cost. Master didn't have a stacked mast for the seats, as the FST and Sport did.

Three color options were available for the Haro Master. Neon Green was the team issue. Also available were blue and gray. The Haro Master, like the FST or Sport, was available in two sizes.

The 86 Master was a collectible bike. This bike was given to team riders Ron Wilkerson, Dave Nourie and Brian Blyther. Some models only had the rear triangle. Other models had serial numbers beginning in 1985.

Haro decided to reissue both frames using the era correct manufacturing processes when it came time. This time they used locally sourced materials.
