Mountain Bike Project - Why the East Coast is Better

A mountain bike project is not an easy task. Planning, approvals, evaluations are all required for this project. It can also affect the tourism market. This project will make mountain biking more mainstream. It is important to check the permit requirements before you start.

After community members raised concerns about the possibility of developing a Mountain Bike Facility, Warburton MTB projects was founded. The project was supported by a Healthy Parks, Healthy People grant from Parks Victoria, and was subject to a feasibility study from the City of Warburton.

The Rhett WALS memorial trail committee worked closely with the Parks and Recreation Department in order to create the trail. The goal of the committee was to find a location that would allow for maximum use while minimizing the impact on the surrounding environment. In February 1997, the committee started working with Parks and Recreation Department.

On October 30, 1999, the Rhett Walters Memorial Mountain Bike Trail opened. The trail was constructed to avoid the Bear Creek drainage. This was done in order minimize the environmental impact of the trail and to ensure that it could be used by all types mountain bikers.


The trail runs through state forest and Yarra Ranges National Park. It also passes by Warburton. To ensure safety, the trails will be spread across multiple areas.

Warburton has been developing the MTB project for over two-years. More than 22 people spoke in support of the project during a public hearing on December 8, 2010. The public hearing was a success and a plan for development was approved by the Parks and Recreation Commission. After the public hearing, the Commission decided whether to endorse the project.

In the end, the Commission did not recommend the project for endorsement. The Memorial Committee requested that the Commission be presented with a revised plan by a planning commission. The plan would include an evaluation on the impact on the local market and economy. The committee will also be able to evaluate and recommend potential trail sites.

The International Mountain Bike Association's (IMBA) maintains a database called the MTB Project that includes mountain bike trails. Adventure Projects created the database.
